Habitat restoration

Restoration in a coastal watershed is mostly four kinds of work, none of them glamorous, all of them slow.

Riparian planting

Native willow, alder, and dogwood along the bank. Shade lowers water temperature; roots hold the bank; leaf litter feeds the invertebrates that feed the fish. Plantings take three to five years before they do real work.

Bank stabilization

Bioengineered treatments — live stakes, brush layering, root wads — over rock armoring wherever the site allows. Hard armor moves the erosion problem downstream rather than solving it.

Large woody debris placement

Anchoring logs and root wads back into channels that were cleared decades ago, to rebuild pool habitat and sort spawning gravel.

Fish passage

Undersized or perched culverts cut off miles of spawning habitat above them. Replacing one culvert can reopen more stream than years of in-channel work.

Upstream of all of it: runoff

None of the above holds if the watershed keeps delivering flashy, sediment-loaded flows every storm. That is the argument for parcel-scale infiltration — it is restoration work that happens on private property, at private expense, at very large scale.
